Challen H. "Chick" Nikolaus, 101, of Barboursville, passed away with family at his side Monday (March 24, 2014) at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington.
Preceded in death by his father, Forest, and mother, Ada; sisters, Audrey Hammond, Ibby Haas, Bernice Shapley; and daughter-in-law, Debra Nikolaus.
Survived by his loving wife, Betty, of 67 years; son, Larry; nephews, Robert Shapley of New Matamoras, Ohio, and Jeff Haas of Akron, Ohio; nieces, Michell Hunt and Debbie Jackson of Akron, Ohio; and many close neighbors and friends.
Challen, better known as "Chick," born in New Matamoras, Ohio, graduated Marietta High School, Class of 1931. He proudly served his country in World War II as a bombardier on the TBM Avenger aircraft in the Pacific Theater. Following his naval service, Chick became a salesman for General Electric, selling major appliances to retail stores throughout West Virginia. He later worked for Mason Dixon Supply in the same capacity. His fraternal organizations were Masons, Shriners, Elks and American Legion. An avid golfer, he played until age 97, shooting his age or better at each outing. He was an early member of the Huntington Mall Walkers Club and along with Harry, Walt, Dallas, and Tom solved world problems on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while drinking coffee at the Great American Cookie shop. He was a member of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church in Barboursville.
Pastor Patrick Ryan will present a service at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville at 2 p.m. Saturday (March 29, 2014). Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. "Chick" will be buried in New Matamoras, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, 3100 Staunton Road, Huntington, W.Va., 25702.
