Harold R. "Mac" Matthews, 94, of Marietta, went to heaven on Monday (May 5, 2014). His wish was granted when he came home to the farm after a brief hospital stay. He was surrounded by his daughter and her family.
Mac was born Jan. 31, 1920, in Marietta to the late Vernon and Beatrice (Gentzler) Matthews. He worked as an union cement finisher for most of his life and was proud that he probably laid most of the concrete that Shell Chemical Plant sits upon in Belpre. Prior to that, he built many houses in the Marietta area. He loved his work and had just recently said that he loved his job so much he couldn't wait until the next morning. During that time he only missed one day of work due to a funeral and was never late. He was active in the community and for over 35 years he was an advisor for the Lynch Combined 4-H Club.
Mac cherished his two loves...his family and his farm. He always put his family first, enjoyed making them happy and providing for them.
He often reminisced with family and friends about growing up on the farm and said he wouldn't have traded that for anything in the world.
He is survived by his daughter, Vickie (Mark) Kelly; grandsons, Dustin and Tyler Kelly; son, Larry Matthews; grandson, Connor Matthews. Also surviving is his only sister, Verna Deloris "Amy" Holden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years of marriage, Margaret "Peg" Matthews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014, at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta with Wendy Erb officiating. Burial to follow in Lynch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
