Ernie Cornell has resigned as the director of the Marietta High School and Marietta Middle School bands, but will finish off the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year.
Cornell, who joined the district in fall 2007, will still direct all of the concerts and band events in May, like the high school's spring band concert and the Memorial Day Parade.
Marietta City Schools Superintendent Harry Fleming said Cornell's position was just posted and the district recently started collecting resumes to find a replacement.
Upcoming Marietta City Schools band events
7 p.m. today: MHS Spring Concert; Marietta High School auditorium.
5 p.m. Friday: MHS Band banquet; Marietta High School cafeteria.
May 26: Memorial Day Parade, downtown Marietta.
"We will have someone in place by the time band camp comes around," Fleming said.
Band camp begins Aug. 3 for students, with the school year and marching band season beginning just weeks after.
Cornell said his resignation was not job-related.
"I resigned for personal reasons related to my family," he said Monday.
Christine Lisk, a member of the MHS band boosters, said the group understood Cornell's reasoning and is just looking toward the future.
"It's sad to see someone go who has been with your kids that long, but we understand the situation," she said.
Cornell's employment with the district includes teaching the symphonic band, wind symphony, "The Wall of Sound" marching band, pep band, big band jazz band, jazz combo, indoor drum line, music theory and jazz theory, along with directing the bands at Marietta Middle School.
"He stated to us that he wanted to spend more time with his family, and I wish him the very best in that," Fleming said.
