Robert George Ley, Sr.

Robert George Ley, Sr., 95, of Marietta, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Heartland of Marietta.

He was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Akron, to Leo H. and Bertha M. Keller Ley.

Bob graduated from LaSalle Institute in Cumberland, Md., and attended Romney State College in Keyser, W.Va. On Nov. 23, 1940, he married Patricia Hatton Keight at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clarksburg, W.Va. Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. In 1957, he opened Robert's Mens Shop at 254 Front St., and in 1968, moved the shop to the Otto Brothers Building at 118 Putnam St., working there until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, the Elks Club, and was a charter member of the Marietta Boat Club.

Along with his wife of 73 years, Bob is survived by his children, Robert G. Ley, Jr. (Sue) of Cambridge, John L. Ley (Mary Anne) of Marietta, and Michael A. Ley (Jacqueline) of Delroy, Ohio; sisters, Dorothy Altice and Irene Grabenstein; grandchildren, Robert G. Ley, III (Shari) of Granville, Rebecca Metzger of Westerville, Donald K. Ley (Nancy) of Hilliard, Patricia Smith (Rusty) of Newark, Michaelene Dohman (Adam) of Texas, J.R. Ley of Colorado, Stephanie Pfister (Marc) of Durham, Conn., Aaron Ley (Jamie) of New Philadelphia, and Denise Thompson (David) of Raleigh, N.C.; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Irene; a daughter, Noreen S. Ley-Saylor; a brother, Dr. Leo H. Ley, Jr.; sisters, Lucille Moser, Mary Katherine Kennedy and Alberta Robinson; and three grandchildren, Valerie, Wendi and Erik.

Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 2, at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, June 1, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with a Vigil Service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.
