A Marietta man accused of trying to initiate inappropriate sexual contact with a 10-year-old girl was arrested Thursday for gross sexual imposition.
Robert "Buddy" R. Sammons, 68, of 205 Arends Ridge Road, is accused of kissing the young girl on her legs and neck, said Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks.
"The incident occurred on May 25. A mother had dropped her 10-year-old daughter to stay with Mr. Sammons while Sammons' wife and the mother attended a social event," said Mincks.
According to the victim, Sammons began talking to the child about "s-e-x" and asked to make out with her. Sammons reportedly told the child "that's what you do when you watch movies," according to a release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
The child said no, but Sammons reportedly began kissing her, first on her legs and then on her neck.
The child disclosed the event to her mother, who contacted the sheriff's office Monday.
Interviewed by detectives, Sammons admitted kissing the child and knowing it was wrong. He informed detectives that he had been convicted in Texas 30 years ago for a similar event involving a child.
The incident in Texas in 1985 would have been prior to present day sex offender registration, said Mincks.
Sammons said he had touched an 11-year-old female's breasts, served time in jail, and spent 10 years on probation.
Sammons was a friend of the victim's family. Questioned by a caseworker with the Washington County Children Services Board, the child did not indicate there had been any prior inappropriate incidents with Sammons.
Sammons was arrested on a third-degree felony charge of gross sexual imposition. He remains incarcerated in the Washington County Jail. His bond is set at $15,000.
