At Marietta High's season-ending softball banquet at the end of May, Shae Hutchison was summoned to the front of the room.
After the Lady Tiger sophomore received her first-team All-South East District and East Central Ohio League awards, she started to return to her table, but was halted by head coach Stacy Fleming.
"Coach told me to hold up for a minute," Hutchison recalled, "and then she announced to everyone there that I had also been named to the all-state team."

Marietta High sophomore Shae Hutchison has been named to the All-Ohio second-team in softball.
The All-Ohio Division I second team to be more precise.
"My jaw just dropped," Hutchison said, "and I wanted to tear up.
"I was really shocked and wasn't expecting it, because of how many other good players on the team we had. I figured one of them might get it. I guess I was wrong."
As a team, the MHS softball squad struggled on the diamond this past spring. In fact, it went winless with an 0-22 overall record.
The Tigers capped their season with a hard-fought 5-0, 10-inning setback to No. 3-seeded Massillon Perry in a sectional opener.
But Hutchison, a two-year varsity letterwinner, was a bright spot all season long.
"She has been a starter for the Tigers both seasons," Fleming said. "She was our leadoff batter and was an anchor for our middle infield playing shortstop. She also spent some time on the mound and at third base for us this season."
In other words, Hutchison played wherever coach put her - and without complaint.
"I was pretty much a utility player," Hutchison said. "My favorite position was shortstop, though."
No matter where Hutchison played, she did a good job, making only four errors all season long. With good hands and a strong throwing arm, she was solid defensively with a 0.953 fielding percentage.
Offensively, at the leadoff spot, Hutchison finished with a regular-season batting average of .322 (19-for-59). Good at getting on base, she walked 14 times.
A good contact hitter, Hutchison only fanned 10 times all spring.
"She is a great kid who undoubtedly gives 100 percent all of the time," Fleming said. "As her coach, she is a student-athlete that I can depend on to get the job done and I see nothing but improvement."
This summer, Hutchison is both working and playing softball for the Moundsville Titans 16U, a travel team. On June 20, her team is scheduled to compete in a tournament in Parkersburg.
Two days after the tourney, she will be headed to central Ohio.
"Shae has very supportive parents who go above and beyond to make sure she is able to compete at the level at which she does," Fleming said.
"She will be receiving her All-Ohio award at the state banquet June 22 in Columbus."
An all-around athlete at Marietta High, Hutchison is expected to play soccer (keeper position) in the fall and basketball in the winter.
Hutchison is the daughter of Michael and Denise Hutchison. She has an older sister Chelsey, an outstanding softball player in her on right, who recently graduated from Slippery Rock University.
