Former Marietta resident Glenn Allen White died in Palo Alto, Calif., on June 10, 2014, a month after celebrating his 100th birthday with extended family members.
Glenn was born in Oakdale, Calif., to Howard Collins White and Agnes Adams White. He grew up in Berkeley and Stockton. After graduating from College of the Pacific with a B.S. in chemistry, he went to Stanford, where he earned a Masters in Organic Chemistry in 1936. At Stanford he met a pretty graduate student whose lab was across the hall from his. Glenn and Kathleen (Kay) Thorburn were married at Stanford Chapel in 1937, and their marriage lasted 60 years until her death in 1997. Kay and Glenn retired to Marietta in 1975 and Glenn was active in the Marietta Rotary Club and Christ United Methodist Church. In the early 1990s, Glenn and Kay moved Los Altos, Calif., to be near their son Ed White. In 1998, he married Ellen Connor Oleson, who died in November 2011.
Glenn had a long and successful career with Shell Chemical Co., where he became a plant manager and built two chemical plants, one in Belpre, Ohio, and one in Geismar, La. After his retirement he joined SCORE and enjoyed advising small business owners. He was interested in archeology, travel and good wine.
Glenn was predeceased by daughter Pamela Erb. He is survived by son Ed White (Patti) of Los Altos; daughter Valerie Peterson of Duncanville, Texas; stepson, Mike Connor (Katherine) of Grass Valley; stepdaughter, Molly Martin (George) of Palm Desert; seven grandchildren, Greg and Eric White, Susan White Sanders, Chris and Scott Peterson, Eric Erb and Cindy Erb Holmes; and 12 great-grandchildren, Holly and Jordan Peterson, Elizabeth White, Lauren and Ethan Sanders, Elissa and Isabelle Erb, Grace and Logan Holmes, and Hayden, Owen and Drew White.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Christ Episcopal Church, Los Altos on July 12, 2014 at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Christ Episcopal Church, Los Altos or to Hospice of the Valley.
