With an unemployment rate of 7.7 percent, any news of expanding business with added jobs is good news in Morgan County.
As of May, Morgan County was one of six Ohio counties with unemployment rates higher than the state of Ohio (5.3 percent) and higher than the national rate (6.1 percent). All but one of the Ohio counties with the highest unemployment rates fall in southeast or southern Ohio.
That's why news of job creation in Morgan County is good news for the whole region.
This week, Miba Sinter USA of McConnelsville opened a new 42,000 square foot expanded production facility which the company said will result in 100 jobs added over the next few years. Officials of the Austrian company were on hand for the announcement as was Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who touted the efforts of JobsOhio which provided a $50,000 grant to the company to help in training new workers. The company also received about $2 million in workplace expansion loans from JobsOhio.
Miba opened its McConnellsville location four years ago and it's been growing steadily since. The company's move to strengthen its presence in southeast Ohio is testimony to the local people who work there, and the ability of the region to find and train even more good workers.
We're glad to see some positive economic news in Morgan County and hope to see Miba, and other area companies, continue to grow in the future.
