The new Valley Gem will be sidelined at least three days after the sternwheeler's wheel fell of Tuesday afternoon during a passenger trip on the Ohio River. The sternwheeler was left dead in water about 4 p.m. just above the Williamstown bridge.
75 years ago (1939)
"Tobacco-from Weed to Industry" is the topic of an address which Rotarians will hear at their meeting Thursday at the Lafayette Hotel.
25 years (1989)
A least four vehicles and numerous footbridges caught in rising water were among the property damaged after a severe thunderstorm struck the Little Muskingum River area last night. Jeff Binegar, a member of the Little Muskingum Volunteer Fire Department, reported this morning that at one time the Ludlow and Liberty township areas received about 3 inches of rain in 90 minutes.
50 years (1964)
Marietta's junior Davis Cuppers were winners in their matches Saturday at the Marietta College tennis courts where they played the Junior Davis Cuppers of Vienna. Mariettans won four singles and one double.
75 years (1939)
The 40 et 8 cabin north of Woodsfield will be the scene of one of the county's largest and most interesting organization affairs when the district picnic of the American Legion and 40 et 8 is held this weekend. The two day affair will begin Saturday at noon.
100 years (1914)
The hottest weather of the summer was experienced Sunday afternoon when the mercury mounted to 102 degrees between 12:30 and 1:30 o'clock. This was within two degrees of the record mark registered on the thermometer at the home of Prof. T. D. Blscoe, on Front Street.
