Mary Ella Holdren Parsons, 100, of Belpre, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the Marietta Center.

She was born in Little Hocking, Ohio, Oct. 14, 1913, a daughter of the late Thurman A. and Grace McGirr Holdren.

Mary had worked at Miller's Store and Peoples Bank, both in Belpre. She retired from Belpre City Schools after 16 years, where she served as Assistant Clerk-Treasurer. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Belpre Chapter #541 for over 60 years and was Past Matron. She was a former member of the Valley Rose Society and grew prize-winning roses. Mary was a member of Belpre Congregational Church since 1927 and had served as a Sunday school teacher and church secretary.

Surviving are one son, Robert M. Parsons and wife Robin of Marietta; granddaughters, Crista Lee Parsons of Pickerington, Ohio, and Ella Marie Parsons of Green Bay, Wis.; sister-in-law, Marjorie "Pudge" Holdren of Richmond, Va.; nieces, Mary Barnhart of Chesapeake, Va., and Betty Holdren of Richmond, Va.; nephews, John Holdren of Onancock, Va., and Joe Holdren of Hope Mills, N.C.; and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Arch C. Parsons; two brothers, T. Leonard "Dutch" Holdren of Richmond, Va., and Joe F. Holdren of Belpre; and nephew, Thomas L Holdren of Fairfax Station, Va.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, July 17, at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, with Rev. Nancy O'Dell officiating. Burial will be at Rockland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, and for one hour prior to the service on Thursday, July 17.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mary's memory to the memorial fund at Belpre Congregational Church, 228 Main Street, Belpre, Ohio 45714.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to those members of the staff of the Marietta Center and to Marietta Home and Hospice care, who gave her such kind and loving care, and also to Ms. Billie Horner, her roommate of 17 months, who became such a beloved friend and companion.
