VINCENT - Brandon Pahl is an All-Ohio wrestler in the heavyweight division.
But during the grappling season, on Jan. 10, 2015, the Warren senior is expected to take a short break from the mat action to don a helmet and pads at the annual Blue-Grey All American Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Fla.
Pahl, a 6-foot-2, 298-pound offensive and defensive tackle, will be competing on the North squad in the contest, which will be streamed live and also taped delayed by Fox Sports South to the nation.
Warren football players’ Brandon Pahl, right, and Jared Isner, left, pose at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, where they tried out for the Blue-Grey All American Bowl. Pahl will be competing in the all-star contest at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Fla., on Jan. 10, 2015.
"I'm really excited and thankful for the opportunity to be able to play with some great players," said Pahl, who received his letter of selection just recently.
A prime prospect, Pahl had to try out to earn a roster spot on the all-star team. During the summer, he and Warren running back Jared Isner attended combines at Paul Brown Stadium, the home venue of the Bengals, in Cincinnati, and at Fawcett Stadium, site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
"I never expected to make it that far," Pahl said. "But I guess I did."
Over 6,750 featured senior football recruits got an opportunity to show their wares at regional Blue-Grey combines at various NFL stadiums or training sites nationwide. Of that number, only 90 elite participants were fortunate enough to be selected to play in the All American Bowl.
Competing in this contest is a big deal, because there's the possibility of a recruit being offered a football scholarship by a college in January.
Pahl is scheduled to report to the Doubletree Westshore in Tampa Jan. 8. He will be housed with another teammate.
That same Thursday afternoon and the following day, the Warren standout will be on the practice field.
On the eve of the game, it'll be media night for the players and parents.
Kick-off is set for Saturday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m., Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium.
"It should be a lot of fun," Pahl said.
To help defray the costs and sponsor Pahl's journey to the Sunshine State, donations would be greatly appreciated, For more information, contact his parents at (740) 434-7160 or 434-7161.
Pahl is the son of Mike and Kelly Pahl of Vincent.
