Hunger Solutions Mid-Ohio Valley has announced a donation of $30,000 to the SE Ohio Food Bank and Kitchen with a goal to make healthier food more available and increase access to food for families in our region.
"Hunger affects one in six people across the United States and one in four in Ohio" says Scott Cantley, President and CEO of the Memorial Health System. "The SE Ohio Food Bank and Kitchen serves 10 counties, including Washington County and ensures families and children have access to nutritional food. Hunger Solutions is committed to raise awareness and helping eliminate hunger in our region by bringing resources and support to lessen and end hunger in the Mid-Ohio Valley. This Food Purchase Program is a monumental benefit to the thousands of friends, neighbors, community members who rely upon local Food Pantries for nutritional meals. We appreciate the work the Food Bank does to make a difference."
Lili Glover, SE Ohio Food Bank and Kitchen Manager, expresses gratitude. "This important donation will enable our organization to develop a purchasing program that provides targeted food to pantries and other member agencies at about 10% below retail prices."
Funds generated from the purchasing program would be re-invested back into the purchasing program. As agencies purchase food, more is able to be secured to avoid shortages and lack of stock on particular items.
"The SE Ohio Food Bank and Kitchen is able to optimize its purchasing power by utilizing its network of food suppliers, other food banks, national and state organizations, major food manufacturers, food wholesalers and food retailers," says Glover. "We can then purchase large quantities of food at deeply discounted prices from across the nation, maintaining a rotating stock of food year round."
Glover says, "This extraordinary gift will impact families in our community in so many ways. We are grateful to Hunger Solutions of the Mid-Ohio Valley for their support."
Hunger Solutions members assisted in raising the funds for the donation. Ohio Health O'Bleness Hospital and the Charles O'Bleness Foundation each contributed $5,000. The remaining $20,000 was raised by the Peoples Bank, Memorial Health System, and Bricker & Eckler LLP.
Other initiatives taking place through Hunger Solutions include the expansion of the Live Healthy Kids program which sends food educators into second-grade classrooms to teach them about proper nutrition.
Hunger Solutions: is a nonprofit entity created by a task force formed by the Memorial Health System, Peoples Bank and Marietta College to address hunger locally about a year ago. Its members now include: Peoples Bank, Memorial Health System, Marietta College and Bricker & Eckler LLP. Collaboratively, they bring together resources and support to raise awareness and help eliminate hunger in our region.
Southeastern Ohio Food Bank and Kitchen: Is a large warehouse run by Hocking-Athens-Perry Community action. It receives surplus food donations from the government, major food manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. The food is distributed to charitable feeding organizations (food pantries and soup kitchens) throughout 10 counties in Southeastern Ohio: Athens, Hocking, Lawrence, Morgan, Vinton, Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, Perry and Washington. Either these organizations can pick up the food or it can be delivered. Organizations then distribute the food throughout their communities to those most in need.
