Mary Margaret Armstrong Irvin, 97, died on Aug. 4, 2014 at Autumn Health Care in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
She was born March 1, 1917 in Mannington, W.Va. to Ernest Lynn Armstrong and Margaret Janet Starlin Armstrong. Mary graduated from Beverly High School in, 1934 and from Holzer Hospital School of Nursing in Gallipolis, Ohio in 1938 where she earned her certification as a registered nurse.
On May 1941 she joined the army and in January 1942 she landed in Ireland as a part of the 10th Station Army Nurses Corps. She left the army in 1945 and married Lt. Dick Kelly Irvin on June 30, 1946 at the Beverly Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Beverly United Methodist Church, where she was a choir member, Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and WSCS and she regularly attended the Gay St. United Methodist Church with her daughter Frances in Mount Vernon.
She belonged to the Beverly American Legion Post #389 and the American Legion Auxiliary as well as the AMVETS Post #95 in Mount Vernon. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lower Muskingum Historical Society. She was a member of the Rebekahs and the Eastern Star. She was a leader in both the Boy and Girl Scouts when her children were a part of those organizations.
She is survived by children, Frances M. Irvin of Mount Vernon, Lynn and Judy Irvin of Ruston, Louisiana, Margaret Connor of Manassas, Virginia and W. Ross Irvin of Orient, Ohio; her grandchildren, Karen and Chris Hanchey, T. Kelly and Jaime Irvin, Chris and Carrie Irvin, Cody Connor and his fiance Krista Zalokar, Joe and Jake Irvin, and great grandchildren, Jude, Owen and Charlotte Hanchey, Karly LeFleur, Emerson and Addison Irvin and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Capt. Dick Kelly Irvin on September 28, 2002, her parents, her brother, Marshall Armstrong, her son in law, Jerry Connor and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Beverly United Methodist Church, 700 Park St. in Beverly with Pastor Matthew Weaver officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, Aug. 8, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly and before the services at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Beverly Cemetery with military services at the grave. There will a memorial service also at the Gay St. United Methodist Church on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 at 6 p.m. with the Dr. John Capper officiating.
