Robert L. Cole, 92, of Marietta, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1921, to the late Edwin Chase and Rosa Lee Cole. Robert, his brothers and sisters, were the fourth generation to be reared on the Cole Farm. Four brothers, Arthur Thomas, William, Donald and John, and three sisters, Jeanette Frith, Helen Sprague and Frances Hune preceded him in death.
Following a stint in the Army, and his marriage to Virginia P. McIntire, Robert and his young family moved back to the home place to care for his elderly parents and the family property. Once an apple and dairy farm, Robert devoted his spare time to refurbishing the house and gradually demolishing the farm buildings in keeping with the changing "neighborhood". Affectionately, called the "mayor of North Hills", Robert loved to recount the history of the farm as it paralleled the growth and development of Marietta. He enjoyed woodworking and keeping his yard well-mannered.
A graduate of Marietta High School, he participated in athletics and continued to follow the Tigers throughout his lifetime. Robert retired as a Class "A" machinist from Union Carbide. Prior to his employment at U.C., he was a tool and die maker at Remington Rand. Robert was a 70-year member of Norwood United Methodist Church; he was a 32nd Degree and 60-year member of Harmar Lodge #390 F.&A.M.; and a member of American Legion Post 64.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Virginia, in 1998; and his younger daughter, Linda, in 2005. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Judith Cole of Oxford, Miss.; and Linda's three children, Rob (Pam) Hadley of Marietta, Jamie (Craig) Godsey of Columbus, Ohio, and Kevin Siegfried of Marietta.
The family wishes to acknowledge Robert's longtime caregiver extraordinaire, Pam Sewell, and caregivers, Susie Kelley and Sandy Guilinger for their loyalty and tireless efforts. Special thanks is also extended to the staff at Harmar Place.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 21, at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta. Burial to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the funeral home.
