A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Many "special-interest" supporters have selected dubious “facts” that reflect an extreme partisan view point. Many of their assertions are based on myth and ignorance of the current law. A “Right-to-Work” law is redundant, lowers wages and benefits for all workers, and destroys the tax base for local communities. When real facts are taken into account, it is not economic development strategy driving this issue. Rather, it is an extreme, outdated, partisan agenda. The real problem with a “Right-to-Work” law and its special-interest supporters is that in their zest and zeal to hurt unions, they hurt non-union workers as well. Many "Union Fat Cat" supporters have selected dubious “facts” that reflect an extreme partisan viewpoint. Many of their assertions are based on myth and ignorance of the current law. A “Right-to-Work” law secures the right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not to join or financially support a union. When real facts are taken into account, it is not workers rights strategy driving this issue. Rather, it is an extreme, outdated, union fat cat agenda. The real problem with unions and its special-interest supporters is that in their greed and selfishness hurt real unions, they hurt non-union workers as well.

"right to work is wrong".co m They are all about choice, when it has nothing to do with that ! Any person seeking a job has the right to either to go to work at A: a union-shop or CHOOSES to work at B: a non-union shop !! Thats pretty clear and debunks these lies from people like wrongriki and others of that ilk ! The soul reason is to try and drive a wedge in the union membership ! What they cant understand is unions are all about brotherhood and unity , something they will never have !"right to work is wrong".co m

The whole of your arguement is that people dont have a choice RIGHT ?Well seems to me that if a person either chooses to work at A: a union shop or B: a non-union shop they are making a conscience choice ! SO EXACTLY HOW IS MAKING A CHOICE NOT A CHOICE !!! And if this fact is correct ( and it is ) then wouldnt that make your whole right-wing bullsh#t fest a lie ??•The average worker—unionized or not—working in a right-to-work state earns approximately $1,500 less per year than a similar worker in a state without such a law.Right to Work For Less By ThinkProgress War Room on Dec 10, 2012 at 5:26 pm "right to work is wrong". c om

"right to work is wrong".co m Well for a welfare addicted republican parrot , regular people would think that you would be grateful for the rights and dignity afforded all workers by the efforts of unions and their members ! But your constanrt denial of FACTS comes as NO SURPRISE since you have never had a job much less a union job ! Most would think that you, being supported by the taxes of hard working people would at least acknowledge that unions have benefited all labor ! To be so unthankful is truely a republican trait !"right to work is wrong".co m

Munster . . . Go ahead copy and paste your repetitive posts some more since still are having problems with that pesky thinking for yourself thing.

Choice is the Ohio Workplace Freedom Amendment. When Ohioans make the CHOICE to support the Ohio Workplace Freedom Amendment. They ARE MAKING A CHOICE to support the WORKERS freedom to choose whether to participate in a labor organization or NOT.
