A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

“Recently, teachers in the Roscommon school district jettisoned the MEA in favor of an independent union, which costs them less in annual dues and provides better service.”

Updated: Right-to-work legislation put down hard, CONCORD— For the third time in three years, right-to-work legislation was defeated, this time when the House voted 212-141 Wednesday, killing the bill.

****

After two years of heated and bitter battles when former House Speaker William O'Brien, R-Mont Vernon, made right-to-work one of his priorities, lawmakers this year spent about 45 minutes debating House Bill 323, which would prohibit employers and labor organizations from including fees for non-union members in collective bargaining agreements. ***** Opponents said HB 322 is an attack on organized labor that will drive down wages and destroy middle class families in a race to the bottom. “And now that “right-to-work” has freed Michigan educators from forced unionization, local teacher union leaders are scrambling to find ways of retaining those members who have had enough of the MEA’s radical ways.”

What ? Is this a guess ? A sizable number ?? Oh I think I'm seeing it now :EAGnews**** He works for Kyle Olson who has made other appearances on Fox Business Network, NPR and MSNBC. Kyle has given scores of interviews on talk radio programs coast to coast. His work has been cited by the Drudge Report, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. “A sizeable number of teachers are sick of the MEA’s hyper-partisan ways that put politics and special interest concerns over the practical needs of rank-and-file members, reports Bridge Magazine.”

Didn't figure you would understand !Point is you whine about union officers who earn money representing hundreds of thousands and yet CEO's make billions !

Now back to the topic of "A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?"

Munster is the type who would do all the whining about paying dues while gladly accepting the benefits of a USW retirement that unions provide. Utterly typical of a “FREE-RIDER”!
