A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Munster’s LIE ~ “retiree's no former active union members pay dues”

The long-time retired “dues exempt” USW member LIES again ~ “retiree's no former active union members pay dues”

“Retired Workers Membership and Dues”

. . .

Just why would anybody care about what a non-working long-time retired dues exempt leach on today’s USW workers has to say about the workplace freedom amendment?

Of course we would expect that sort of mis-leading crap from wrongriki ! And just why would anybody care about what a non-working leach on society has to say on unions ? It has no experience and the only info it gets is from right-wing garbage factories !

Well here you go but thead , it isn't going to get anymore credible than the "Bureau of Labor Statistics" According to a January 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, workers who belong to a union typically earn higher pay than non-union workers doing the same kind of job. Although it varies based on sector and occupation, the overall averages are striking.

$917 = Median weekly earnings in 2010 of union members.

$717 = Median weekly earnings in 2010 of non-union workers.

That's a yearly difference in salary of $10,400 for union members vs. non-union members.

Union members earn an average of $4.95 more per hour - which equates to a yearly difference of $10,300.

“A Hill Research Associates poll conducted in March on behalf of Opportunity Ohio and the Liberty Foundation asked respondents whether they most agreed with the statement, “Some people say workers shouldn’t have to pay union dues to hold a job,” or with the statement, “Other people say strong unions help workers and push to boost wages and benefits.” ”

Wouldn't be so bad except for your total ignorance of unions and their affairs ! For "people" like wrongriki , who cant accept the facts that prove them wrong , its a sad state of affairs that even after being debunked they keep up this constant barrage of ignorant right-wing crappola !Wrongriki and others like it are all that's wrong with these forums ! Myth: Unions just want workers’ dues. Fact: Money that workers pay in dues goes back into running the organization—unions are not for-profit organizations. The improvements workers win in pay, benefits and fair treatment through their unions are far greater than the cost of dues. Dues levels are set by each local union through a democratic process.

Myth: Most union bosses are corrupt. Fact: It’s a tragic situation when a trusted leader betrays the membership in any kind of organization. However, for every high-profile story that is in the media about a corrupt union leader, there are thousands of regular, honest leaders who are never profiled.

Myth: Unions are quickly shrinking. Fact: Actually, the number of union members has stayed steady for the past 50 years, but the workforce itself has grown. Sixteen million working men and women in the United States are union members.

Myths and Facts About Unions

Myth: Unions are outside, special-interest groups. Fact: Workers are the union. A union is simply a democratic organization of working people standing up for their rights on the job and in society. Unions also bring people together in the community to stand up for issues that matter to all working people.

Myth: Unions mean more conflict in the workplace. Fact: Unions can make the workplace a more harmonious place to work. A union contract allows the company and workers to sit down as equals and discuss problems as they come up. Without a union, workers’ lives are often in more turmoil because they have to deal with more favoritism and less economic security.

Myth: Companies close due to unions. Fact: Companies close for economic reasons—and the vast majority of companies that close are nonunion. Some companies, however, like to keep this myth alive by illegally threatening workers who attempt to form a union !

“As more and more workers in the private sector have voted to reject having a union represent them, the unions' answer has been to take away secret-ballot elections.”
