A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Well here you go but head , it isn't going to get anymore credible than the "Bureau of Labor Statistics" According to a January 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, workers who belong to a union typically earn higher pay than non-union workers doing the same kind of job. Although it varies based on sector and occupation, the overall averages are striking.

$917 = Median weekly earnings in 2010 of union members.

$717 = Median weekly earnings in 2010 of non-union workers.

That's a yearly difference in salary of $10,400 for union members vs. non-union members.

Union members earn an average of $4.95 more per hour - which equates to a yearly difference of $10,300. (we are ohio.co m)

We don't know because they, unlike unions, don't have to report those donatiions !If it sounds a little fishy you can bet it smells a whole lot fishy !And still regardless of all your efforts workers will have the choice whether to CHOOSE to work union or CHOOSE to work non union which does make it voluntary !Different but the same idiocy so we will remind the vast majority that thumped SB5 that this is just the republicans again trying to screw labor ! We are Ohio.co m No #1 Even though the welfare addicted wrongriki's idiocy about retiree's not paying dues anymore comes as no surprise because again it has no valid point to make ! This outright mission to destroy unions and democracy is personal ! unless we stand up and fight he and his republican masters will take labor back a 100 yrs ! The republicans want us all to be like a third world country and give up the rights and dignity so sorely won !We are Ohio.co m
