| Latest Post: Started By: Rank: Category A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified? As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ...
