Scion's car of the future is a blast from the past.

The FRS, Scion's new offering is rear wheel drive with a 4 cylinder boxer engine. I sincerely hope that more manufacturers follow suit and bring this combo back. Maybe it will help erase the false confidence of the front wheel drive fiasco that has been put opon us since the 1980s!

no problem. it was a fun little car to drive. i think Mazda/Ford has come up with some pretty sharp body styles for all of their models. if you have never ridden in one. the Nissan Altima offers great styling as well as a very powerful engine. it will pull you up and down the mountain with no problem loaded with peeps and golf clubs...oh yea...almost forgot luggage. :-)

absolem, I'm sorry I had forgotten about the earlier gen 626s. Our first was a 1989 and our second was a 1992 although is was MX6 it was still 626 based.

we have always enjoyed the scion product line. i thought they were creative and had much to offer. i think the automarket right now is retro motivated as indicated by the recent reincarnations of some of the iconic body shapes massaged with modern updates inside and out. it is truly a brillaint marketing move by the big three. i was dismayed at the seemingly lost generation of great late 70's up to mid-80's imports have all but vanished. but i am still smitten with the new Mustang GT Fastbacks. they are sharp and seem to be easily tricked-out. i saw a beatiful triple black as well as a deep maroon red fly-by me on the interstate the other day.

Caspiansynn, my 1982 mazda 626 was a rear wheel drive model. that was one of the selling points to me at the time. 1982 was the last year that rwd's were sold in the United States.

Now Toyota has killed Scion and are renaming the FRS as the Toyota 86

Actually the Mazda 626 was a front wheel drive model and the twin to the Ford Probe, a fun car to drive and yes it was very lacking in the power dept.

i have always liked the design of the FRS and yes, it does harken back to the days of proper rear-wheel drive sport cars. in the mid-eighties i enjoyed driving the rear-wheel drive Mazda 626. nice deisgn and ride but a little anemic on the power straight out of the factory. much like the Hyundai Velstar. sharp car but too weak in the engine department to make it any more than jut a looker.
