When should a person be punished for stating an opinion?

As many people might know, 'Duck Dynasty' star Phil Robertson gave an interview to GQ Magazine and gave his colorful opinion on different social topics. The response from various groups made A&E pull him from the show. So the discussion is, if someone is asked for their opinion and gives it willingly, should they be punished afterward?

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry apologized Tuesday for a segment on her show where she and panelists joked about the adopted black grandchild of former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, featured in the family's Christmas photo. As a suggested caption for the photo, panelist Pia Glenn sang, "One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn't the same."

Oh heck, it just an opinion.

I do recall 'MissKay' expressing that 'Phil' wasn't very "nice" in their earlier married years, but she didn't share any examples of his alleged negative behavior(s).For whatever reasons, she chose to maintain the relationship, duck plucking and all.

My father married my mother when she was 15. He was in his 30's. My friends mother was married at 15 also. Both of them were married in the 70's. So its not really anything new Phil is talking about. Its just that in this day and age that kind of thing is looked down on.

Tiredofit, i imagine marriage at such a young age could have been attributed to the shortened life expectancy of americans during that time period. in addition, the preparation for self-sufficiency and management of a household took precedent over the focus of todays learning priorities. quite frankly i think as we have found, having children at a younger age has its benefits as evidenced by studies of the relationship between age and related childbirth complications. you are correct i would have and was pleasantly not presented with that scenario from my daugters....as of yet but they are well beyond that age. :-)

Melissa Harris-Perry’s MSNBC Panel Mocks Mitt Romney’s Black Grandson:

She tweets an sppology.

Using a baby to make a political punchline is a tough sale, with a high bar for comedy and commentary.

"It’s funny because Romney is white and his grandson isn’t, which is obviously hilarious. Because as everyone knows, the races should not mix."

asknot, do you believe you could survive a complete "reporting" of every statement you've made in your life? Though he and Kay married at a young age, that statement was made in jest. Context people, context!

asknot, i am perplexed as to why it took so long for anyone to comment. i am waiting for the folks that lambasted megyn kelly over Santa and Jesus white comment dust-up to climb out of their racist-warrior shells and attack one of their own. so far no shell-crabs...only crikets. btw there appeared to be an illustrious panel of racial-warriors on the panel that seemed to enjoy a good guffaw. i am not against a good laugh myself. i even cracked up at the adoptive family that Steve Martin had in the movie "The Jerk". the only problem is thats its intent was contrasting and condradictory humor...the real life of the child with their new family was not. thank you asknot...think they are ignoring due to this being a "vasr right-wing conspiracy"?

atlas2025, you only perceive that you are free from others control as long as you are in agreement with their wants. we abide by the wishes and desires of others and are not completely free. our own minds, for now, allow us to be free. the restrictions on our actions, liberties, expressions and movements are governed by many whom we will never meet. our only true freedom in the process is called the vote and thats under the assumption that your vote really counts. with the electronic age of ellections, manipulations come much easier than hiring bodies to stuff a ballot box. whether we agree or not, the ability to impose ones will on another in a "free" country is the bedrock of what many like to call a democracy operating under the guise of freedom. it that the freedom you speak of?

An aspect to this gay issue, and a significant one IMO, is that sexual predators are just that.Being gay doesn't indicate you are, or are will be a molester.Often times, heterosexual children who have been molested will themselves be molesters, but not pursue a homosexual lifestyle. But even if they don't violate others in a sexually physical act, they have baggage that can impair their relationships with both genders throughout their lives.

Atlas. You can get on here and accuse people of saying homophobic crap like asknot but you CANNOT go into the past posts and copy and paste it here. Stickhauler said nothing homophobic or racist as I did not either. SO you and asknot need to either SHUT UP about it OR COPY AND PASTE THE ALLEGED POSTS that you are referring everyones being horrible about = KAPISH???? YOU CANT DO IT. You would rather LABEL and be intolerats A S S HOLE S.

Maybe I can get oneill back into the fray with this one.

If there is to be a TRUE separation of church and state, under our constitution, when The Pope visits the US, is he NEVER guarded by any US taxpayer-funded security services. Now, I know The Pope is recognized as a legal head of state (The Vatican), a religiously based state. Therefore, I see that recognized as an endorsement of that religion and laws ARE applied to protect it.

A tenuous example maybe, but one that endures without considered questioning.

atlas said - "The reason so many on the right feel like they are being made to accept the beliefs of others is simply because you guys don't want to mind your own business and just live your own lives."

Speaking personally, when they don't want to "mind their own business", openly push for across the board acceptance by everyone into all societal systems and then go after the teaching, coaching, youth counseling, scout mastering and legal child adoptions, it gives me the creeps.

Would It be accepted that church and state were purposely intended to not share the same prominence in the role of America's governing bodies, and, that matter is well defined by the structure adopted by the founding fathers, and ratified by those original states?
