What is The United States doing in Libya, and why are we doing it?

... I've got mixed feelings about involving the U.S. in yet another war (is it a "war"?), but I wouldn't mind seeing Khadaffi (Quadafi, Gadaffi, or Mad Muammar) hanging Mussolini-like from a Tripolitan lamp-post ... I wonder if the historically-challenged folks who like to post here know that this is the fourth time that the U.S. has been involved in North Africa? ... When, where, and what were the circumstances behind our three previous efforts in that area? ... Warning - As a naive youth, I took an Army Reserve-sponsored class in U.S. military history and received an A+! Go for it!
