Does academic achievement in schools get enough attention?

If I could check "Agrees" a million times with what 30Momma posted, I believe I'd take the time to do it.

One hundred years hence, will it be the student that went on to become a statesman, businessman, scientist, doctor, musician, etc. OR some kid that threw a ball the furthest, that will be discussed/remembered/appreciated?

Why do we direct so much of our money toward sports, while other countries are eating our lunches over science, math and engineering?

Too much now is given to everyone is a winner. They give ribbons to all who take part and if you come in first it is treated as if it is nothing special.

NO! Academic achievement rarely gets the attention, instead it is teacher pay, sports, and threatening to take away vital areas of education, such as music and physical education. This country does not understan we have an obese epidemic that can result in heart diesease and diabetes. The educational system focuses too much time and energy on standardized testing. How about permitting the teachers carryout what they are payed to do, such as TEACH. My junior high and high school History teacher was absolutely amazing. Mr. Joseph Kristich engaged the class in indepth conversation concerning the history of the United States. He would pull down these large maps, attached to the"chalkboard", of various countries. He would trace the steps taken by many United States and foreign solders during various wars. He would bring to light the "what if scenarios" that I would eventually study at more length in college. I taught college students for 42 years--and a lot of it was skills and knowledge they should have received in high school.
