VINCENT –Erin Bogard soared a personal record 11 feet in the pole vault at the Warrior Invitational Saturday.

The Warren sophomore, a state qualifier in the event last spring, is hoping to go even higher before the end of the season.

“I’d like to get 12 feet before state (in June),” said Bogard, who cleared the bar at 9-6 as a frosh at state last year.

Bogard said that conditions were good for pole vaulting at the Warrior Invite.

“The wind was pretty calm today,” she added. “It’s better than the other meets we’ve had.”

Bogard’s 10 points in the event helped the Sally Maddox-coached Warren girls’ track and field team capture their own invite with a tally of 108 points. Alexander was runner-up with 94. Rounding out the rest of the field were Maysville (57), Morgan (53), River Valley (48), Meigs (47), Waterford 41, Belpre (39), Parkersburg Catholic (32), Fort Frye (32), and South Gallia (4).

On the boys’ side, Meigs was first with 124 points, while Tim Carver-led Warren was second with 91.50. Rounding out the rest of the field were Maysville (72), River Valley (71), Alexander (51), Morgan 48, Belpre (40), Fort Frye (39), Catholic (11), and Waterford (10.50).

Bogard was one of four Warren thinclads to earn a first place in an event. Kate Liston won the discus; Kaleenia Quartermaine, the shot put; and Emilia Bowe, the 400. In the relays, the Warrior 4×400 team of Hope Murdock, Lauren Gardner, Abigail Werry, and Bowe was first as was the 4×800 team of Caroline Stollar, Casey Brague, Sophie Knapp, and Gardner.

In other girls’ events, Fort Frye senior and Liberty University recruit Mary Kate McElroy outdistanced Morgan’s Jordan Penrod in the 3200 with a first-place clocking of 11:48.80.

“I wasn’t really racing Jordan as much as I was racing the clock,” McElroy said. “I had a time goal in mind, so I was hoping to break 12 and that’s what I did.”

McElroy’s PR in the distance is 11:37.

“Good competition means good race times,” McElroy said.

“I’m so excited to race with Jordan. She’s very competitive and I’m blessed to run with her.”

Jasmine Penrod, Jordan’s twin sister, enjoyed a good outing at the invite, winning the 1600 and 800. She was also runner-up in the shot.

“I ran the 1600 earlier today and I tried really hard, but I wasn’t really fast in it,” Penrod said. “I felt bad after it.

“So for the 800, I wasn’t trying to be fast. I just wanted to win. I tried to stay with people until the end. They were trying to speed up. I didn’t start off really fast.”

Parkersburg Catholic’s Alexis Saunders also won two events, the 300 hurdles and the open 200.

Belpre junior Tojzae Reams, a state hurdles qualifier last season, notched a couple of wins on the track, in 300 hurdles and 100 open.

“I didn’t get the time I wanted in the hurdles, which is the school record,” Reams said. “The school record 38.8. I was trying to get at least a 39 today. I finished with a 41.”

Belpre’s Logan Racy was first in the discus, Morgan’s Logan Harrelson captured the shot put. Morgan’s Cade Mollahan won the pole vault.

After finishing second in the 1600, Warren’s Trent Sayre bounced back with a win in the 3200 in a time of 10:35.90.

“I just wanted to run my race — fast,” he said. “That’s the only way to do it.”

The Warren 4×2 relay team of Justin Lough, Kendrick Foreman, Peyton Angelo, and Alex Mills was first in 1:35.90
