BELPRE — Belpre High was goal-driven.

The Golden Eagle booters put a half dozen balls into the back of the net en route to a 6-0 blanking of Ravenswood High in prep soccer action Thursday night at Ralph Holder Stadium.

“We’re pretty excited,” said BHS head coach Mike Matheny. “I don’t think in the past five years we’ve beaten Ravenswood at all.”

Earlier this season, the Golden Eagles (4-4) dropped a 5-1 decision to the Red Devils (5-5-1) in Jackson County, W.Va.

“Payback’s sweet definitely,” said Belpre sophomore midfielder Tyce Church. “We played nice today. They (Red Devils) were a little bit off their game, and we took advantage of it.”

Church and exchange student Asaphe Santana each scored two goals to lead the Eagles. Santana also had one assist.

“The team worked together today,” Santana said.

Added Matheny, “Asaphe is from Brazil, so he’s been a pretty good asset for us.”

Senior tri-captain Wyatt Fields added one goal and one assist, while sophomore Connor Van Fossen chipped in with a score. Freshman Jacob Maze also was credited with an assist.

Senior tri-cap Rawlin Barber and sophomore Brady Clem combined for five saves between the pipes and earned a clean sheet.

Ravenswood keepers’ Josh Mize and Hayden Rynolds also combined for five saves.

“I’m very disappointed with the team,” said RHS boss Todd Murray. “We just didn’t show up today. Hopefully, this is our last day that we don’t show up for a game.”

Murray paused.

“It’s always a tough game with Belpre,” the Red Devils’ coach added. “It’s not like we took them for granted just because we beat them last time. It was a tough game when we beat them at home (Jackson County).”

About midway through the first half, Belpre staked itself to a 1-0 advantage when Santana put the finishing touch on Field’ right-wing cross.

Then, four minutes before the half, Church lofted a long, long center shot that cleared Mize’s head and into the goal, making it 2-0.

“I caught it right,” said Church of the kick which was not far from midfield.

Santana made it 3-0 with an attack up the middle and a shot just inside the right post.

In the 39th minute, Van Fossen got a goal with Maze assisting to give Belpre a commanding 4-0 advantage at the intermission.

Early in the second half, the rout resumed when Church beat Reynolds with a shot, making it 5-0. Santana got the assist.

Capping all the scoring near the end of the match, Fields lined up for a left-side corner boot and banana-kicked it into the goal.

“We played well tonight,” Church said.
