Fort Frye netters cruise

Fort Frye’s Julia Zalmanek (21) and Kasey Buchanan (31) go up for a block attempt against Beallsville’s Ashlie Louden during sectional final action at Cadet Gym Saturday. Fort swept the Blue Devils, 3-0. RON JOHNSTON, The Marietta Times

BEVERLY — Kasey Buchanan celebrated her 18th birthday Saturday with a prep volleyball career milestone.

The 6-foot senior middle hitter recorded her 1,000th kill as top-seeded Fort Frye claimed an OHSAA Division IV sectional championship with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-10 sweep of 12th-seeded Beallsville at Cadet Gym.

Earlier, fifth-seeded New Philadephia Tuscarawas Central Catholic defeated seventh-seeded Strasburg-Franklin, 25-22, 25-18, 25-23.

Pioneer Valley Conference champion Fort Frye (18-4) and Tuscaraswas Central Catholic will face each other in a district semi at site to be determined at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Going into the Beallsville match, Buchanan was four kills shy of the milestone.

“I had an idea that I was close,” she said. “But I really don’t think about it. I just go out and play. I’m more concerned about the team rather than myself.”

Buchanan finished with a match-high 16 kills, 13 points, seven aces, six digs, and three blocks.

“She’s worked so hard for that (milestone),” said FFHS head coach Tiffany Smith. “It’s awesome.”

Senior hitter Jade Baker added eight kills, while junior setter Stephanie Camden had a match-high 25 assists and six points. Earlier this season, Camden recorded her 1,000th milestone assist.

Junior hitter Maddie Webb chipped in with 12 points and sophomore hitter Karlee Ross had nine.

“They came out and focused on playing our game,” said Smith of her team.

“I think they are confident, and honestly I feel like that’s something they’ve gained from the season — and gotten to a really good place with that. They’ve got that going for them, now.”

Jeff Fluharty-coached Beallsville (10-13) was led by senior Olivia Muncy’s three kills and five digs. The Blue Devil netters led briefly 2-1 early in the second set, the only time they had an advantage in the entire match.

Sparked by Camden’s setting and the power hitting of Buchanan, Baker, Webb, and Ross, Fort dominated each game from start to finish.

In the opening set, Buchanan’s fourth and milestone kill stretched the Cadet lead to 16-7. After that kill, Beallsville called timeout.

“Our girls knew what was going on and they were excited for her,” Smith said. “But we couldn’t actually stop the match and do a formal announcement, because we were the host school. That was coincidental that they (Blue Devils) called timeout.”

In the third set, Buchanan’s serving was on display as she recorded most of her aces in a 15-point blowout.
