Cadets improve to 4-0 with 42-34 victory over Colts
BYESVILLE — A huge second quarter scoring explosion lifted visiting Fort Frye past Meadowbrook High by a final count of 42-34 in a non-league match-up at Eugene Capers Field on Friday night.
Trailing 6-0 after the opening quarter with Colts’ senior Timmy Ferguson putting up the game’s first score with a two-yard run at the 2:42 mark of the first period, the Cadets offense cranked out four second quarter touchdowns to surge to a 28-12 lead at the halftime break.
Fort Frye responded with a trio of unanswered scores in the second stanza with Tyler Fisher breaking off a 16-yard TD run to get the Cadets into a lead they would hold the rest of the night at 7-6 with 11:19 left before halftime.
Fisher would then haul in a 58-yard scoring pass from QB Ian Ellis at the 9:40 mark to push the Fort Frye lead out to 14-6. Collin Welsh would then tack on a shot one-yard dive to pay dirt at the 5:03 mark for a 21-6 Cadets’ advantage.
Ferguson would then halt the Fort Frye scoring run with his second touchdown of the game with an 18-yard scamper with 4:43 left to close the gap to 21-12 Fort Frye.
But Fort Frye, who entered the night with a perfect 3-0 mark responded like a good team usually does with Ellis reaching the end zone with a two-yard dive into the end zone with just 13.4 seconds to play for the 28-12 halftime lead.
Fort Frye rolled up a total of 298 yards of offense in the first half with 174 yards rushing on 28 carries, while Ellis did some damage through the air hitting on 5-of-8 passes for 124 yards.
“I thought our defense came out and played pretty solid in that first quarter,” Meadowbrook head coach Coular Clendenning offered.
“I think our defense was just on the field too much in that first half, and we need our offense to step up and her carry the load more.”
Despite the huge momentum switch in favor of Fort Frye, the Colts refused to go quietly into the night and continued to battle in the second half.
“I was very pleased the way we played football tonight,” Clendenning added of his Colts, who slipped to 2-2 effort on the night.
“From the way we played tonight compared to last week, I feel we really took a huge step forward as a program. And I’m very, very proud of the way our guys played tonight.”
Ferguson opened the second half with a gridiron version of the hat-trick with his third rushing TD, this one covering four yards at the 2:56 mark of the third period to pull the Colts within 28-20.
Fort Frye once again responded with back-to-back scores to push its lead out to 42-20 with Welsh scoring on four-yard run followed by Fisher with his third touchdown of the night also with an eight-yard run in the early stages of the fourth period with 8:49 left in the game.
Undaunted, the resistant Colts came roaring back and posted back-to back scores of their own. Ferguson reached the end zone for a fourth time with a 10-yard run at the 7:21 mark, with Davis Singleton adding the two-point PAT run to reduce the Fort Frye lead to 42-28.
Senior Addy Black then hauled in a nifty reception for a 69-yard TD pass from Meadowbrook sophomore QB Josh Hupp to get within one score at 42-34 with still 2:10 left in the game.
Fort Frye was able to then run out the remaining game time to hold on for the road victory.
Ferguson worked hard to to record 58 yards on 13 carries with his four TDs, while Hupp hit on 12-of-28 passing attempts for 175 yards with the one touchdown toss. Addy Black hauled in four receptions for 115 yards with his long TD catch while Singleton added five catches for 26 yards for the Colts.
Fisher churned out a game-high 126 yards on the ground in 20 attempts, with Ellis adding 71 yards on 13 totes. Ellis connected on 6-of-10 passes for 152 yards with one TD and one interception.
