Sports Talk: Here’s wishing success to Filkovski in new coaching job
Jeff Filkovski has Carolina on his mind these days.
North Carolina Wesleyan College – to be more specific.
In case you missed it, the former Marietta College gridiron boss was hired as the NCWC Battling Bishops head football coach in early March. He becomes the third head coach in the program’s nine-year history.
The 45-year-old Filkovski was at the MC helm for five fall campaigns. After the Pioneers went winless at 0-10 last season, he decided to step down from the helm. During his stint in Marietta, the navy blue and white gridders were 10-40 overall and 6-39 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Andy Waddle was named the new Marietta College head football coach in December of last year.
North Carolina Wesleyan is an NCAA Division III school located in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Battling Bishops play in the USA South Athletic Conference, which also includes schools like Averett University, Christopher Newport University, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Methodist University, Piedmont College, Covenant College, and Huntingdon College.
The NCWC football program will be in its 10th season this upcoming fall. During its first nine years, the Bishops claimed three conference championships and clinched two NCAA berths
North Carolina Wesleyan is scheduled to kick off its 2013 season in a non-conference game at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md., at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.
Needless to say, Filkovski probably has his debut date circled on the calendar.
Filkovski will be succeeding Mark Henninger, who guided the Bishops to a 3-7 overall record (2-5 USA South) in 2012.
* If you’re curious as to what became of some of the other Marietta College head football coaches, Curt Wiese (2006-07) is now the head man at the University of Minnesota Duluth (Div. II); Todd Glaser (2003-05) is the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (Div. III) boss; Gene Epley (1991-2002) is deceased; Mike Schonewolf (1987-90) is currently the Caesar Rodney High School head football coach and athletic director in the state of Delaware; and Mike Hollway (1983-86) was the Ohio Wesleyan University (Div. III) head man for 25 years before retiring after the 2011 season.
Before departing MC, Hollway only had one more Pioneer football win than Filkovski.
At the OWU Battling Bishops’ helm, Hollway became the winningest football coach (139-110-1).
Maybe Filkovski can do something similar for the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan.
*And, finally…Randy Awrey, Filkovski’s defensive coordinator at MC, was hired as the head football coach at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Ill., this past January – in case you missed it.
