Prep wrestling: Warren’s Parsons sets mat record

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE -At the Miami Trace McDonald’s Invitational on Saturday, Mike Pahl-coached Warren placed ninth in a field of 18 schools.

Levi Congleton was the Warriors’ lone wrestling champion in the 106-pound weight class, earning a 13-3 major decision over Athens’ Skyler St. Peter.

Cory Parsons was a runner-up in the 113-pound weight division. In Parsons’ first match at Miami Trace, he recorded a pin in 24 seconds giving him 92 career pins and a school record.

In the 170-pound weight class, Warren’s Austin Antill placed fourth, and in the 285 division, Brandon Pahl was sixth.

Elsewhere on mat, East Fairmont captured the team title at the Bob Zide Wrestling Rumble in Williamstown, outdistancing runner-up Independence 163.50-135.

But the six area mat squads entered in the event proved their worth, with host Williamstown finishing third just behind Independence with 131.50 points, followed closely by Wirt County with 130.50. Belpre came in fifth with 113.50, Marietta sixth with 69.50, Wahama seventh with 60.50 and St. Marys 10th with 24.

East Fairmont – tied for the top spot in the Class AA/A state ratings – totaled nine placers on the day with three firsts, two seconds, three thirds and a fourth while Independence, No. 7 in AA/A, recorded the most champions with five.

The host Yellowjackets notched two champs – Dalton George at 126 pounds, improving to 21-0 on the season, and Jake Tracewell at 145 to go to 30-5 – as well as three runners-up and three third-place finishers.

Wirt, tied for third in AA/A, crowned a champ – Jon Cain (25-1) at 120 – and had four seconds, a third and a fourth. Belpre registered three runners-up, two seconds and two thirds, and Marietta picked up a second, a third and two fourths. Wahama got a championship from Kane Roush (19-1) at 170 as well as two thirds and a fourth, while St. Marys netted a fourth. Runners-up were Gavin Stalnaker (22-4) of Belpre at 106, Brye Mullenix (22-12) and Bret MacIver (25-12) of Williamstown at 113 and 120 respectively, Hagan Root (26-4) of Wirt at 132 along with Tiger teammates Cody Ferguson (25-10) at 145 and Austin Cottrell (27-8) at 152, Belpre’s Derek Davis (20-9) at 160, Marietta’s Will Cogswell (23-8) at 182, Jamie Barrett (25-8) of Belpre at 195, Nathan Morgan (4-6) of Wirt at 220 and Alex Rauch (22-6) of Williamstown at 285.
