Prep boys basketball: Frontier boys in sectional action tonight
The Frontier High boys’ basketball team has had its share of ups and downs this season, but may be peaking at just the right time.
As they enter tonight’s Division IV sectional semifinal game against Barnesville, the Cougars (6-15) are coming off a 70-51 victory over Beallsville (11-11) Saturday to end the regular season and are riding a little momentum.
“We’re coming off of a good last game against a quality opponent,” said Frontier head coach Roger Kirkpatrick.
In that contest, senior forward Jordan Jefferson posted a game-high 22 points while junior guard Drew Schneider added 19, including four 3-pointers. Overall, Kirkpatrick’s squad had 10 players enter the scoring column.
“Jordan (Jefferson) and (Drew) Schneider are both in double figures (per game),” Kirkpatrick said. “But we’ve got other kids who have been stepping up. You can’t rely on just two players.”
Against Barnesville, Kirkpatrick expects a very evenly matched game.
“They’ve won seven or eight games,” Kirkpatrick said. “We’re pretty familiar with them. They’ve got a couple of good bigs. The split against Beallsville, who we beat twice. We’re two pretty similar teams.”
Along with Jefferson and Schneider, expect seniors Jay Eddy, Taylor Merckle, Cole Farley, Dylan O’Neal, Josh Kirkbride and Dusty Wright, as well as junior Levi Cochran, sophomore Rodney Barnes and freshman Damon Metheney to play pivotal roles in the game.
Kirkpatrick said the keys to victory are fairly simple.
“The main key will just be putting the ball through the hoop,” he said. “If we do that, we’ll be all right.”
Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. tonight at Union Local High School. The winner will advance to the sectional final game on Saturday against either Beallsville or Shadyside.
