Prep girls basketball: Lady Noles down Zeps 62-36

CAMBRIDGE – For the third time in 15 days the Monroe Central Lady Seminoles faced off against the Shenandoah Lady Zeps and for the third straight time the Seminoles were victorious as they rolled to a 62-36 sectional tournament victory Thursday evening at Gene Ford Gymnasium.

It was the “Chelsie and Chelsie Show” for Monroe Central as seniors’ Chelsie Roberts and Chelsie Tewanger accounted for 43 of the 62 points scored by the Lady Noles in the game including 17 in the opening quarter.

“The girls came out right from the start and did what we are supposed to do offensively and hit all of their shots to boot,” said MC head coach Troy Baker, whose team jumped out to a 25-10 lead after the first eight minutes of play. “That really got us rolling.”

Shenandoah got a score from Kasey King to open the second quarter and trimmed the Seminole lead to 13, but Roberts answered with 10 straight points on a pair of deuces and a pair of treys to increase the Noles’ lead to 35-12.

“Roberts has been doing that for us all year long,” said Baker of his senior forward. “She always seems to find a way to get the ball to go thru the hoop and we hope that continues.”

Shenandoah drew back to within 16 at the intermission on late first-half scores by King, Raechel Rossiter and Lydia Fogel.

King, the Lady Zeps sophomore guard, kicked off the second half with a pair of field goals to trim the Seminole lead to 37-24, but a 12-2 Monroe Central run pushed the lead back to 23 with four minutes to play in the third.

“When they (Monroe Central) are shooting as well as they were tonight, they are tough to defend,” said Shenandoah head coach Lynn Miley-Weary.

The two teams had already seen one another three times this season, twice in Pioneer Valley Conference action and most recently one week ago in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference consolation game with the Lady Seminoles winning by scores of 56-34, 51-45, and 61-51.

“They (Shenandoah) gave us a real hard time in that consolation game and actually had a lead on us in the fourth quarter,” said Baker. “We found a way to win but I think that helped us to not overlook them tonight.”

A Roberts basket closed out the third period with MC comfortably in front by a 53-31 margin enabling both coaches to empty their benches for the final quarter of action.

Roberts finished with a double-double as she poured in a game-high 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Tewanger chipped in with 18.

The Lady Noles were deadly from long range as they connected on 6-of-9 three-point attempts including 4-of-5 from Roberts.

Monroe Central out rebounded the Lady Zeps by a 31-18 margin, while committing just 13 turnovers in the game compared to 18 for Shenanhdoah.

Blake Hall paced the Zeps with 12 points in the game while King and Fogel added nine and seven points, respectively.

Miley-Werry sees a very bright future for her Lady Zeps as they finished the season a respectable 12-9 with zero seniors on their roster. “We are a very young team and we will have everyone of our girls back next year,” said Miley Werry. “We’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

While the Zeps season comes to a close, Baker and his 13-7 Lady Seminoles will next take on the Union Local Lady Jets next Tuesday night in a sectional quarter final contest back in Cambridge. Tip-off time is slated for 8 p.m.
