High School Rowing: Tiger Navy tops host South rowers
PARKERSBURG – Marietta High’s shells outrowed host Parkersburg South in a dual race on the Little Kanawha River in south Parkersburg Saturday.
The Tiger Navy captured all five girls’ races, while the boys took three of five from the Patriot Navy.
“Both the boys and girls crews rowed strong races,” said Marietta girls coach Joe Tewkesbury.
Conditions were ideal with no wind, little current, and perfectly smooth water.
“It seemed fitting that the two schools, who are both part of the local organizing committee for the upcoming Midwest Scholastic Championship Regatta near Zanesville, would race each other as PSHS christened their new 1500 meter race venue,” Tewkesbury said.
Marietta’s girls lightweight varsity eight and girls novice eight each remained undefeated on the water as they prepares, along with the rest of the girls and boys crews, for the bigger regattas to follow, first at Wyandotte, Michigan and then the bigger one at Zanesville in the MSRA Championships.
The MHS crew is scheduled to travel to Wyandotte, Mich., for a Saturday race on the Detroit River against teams from the state up north.
