Prep baseball: MHS comes up short
Marietta High dropped two close ballgames 2-1 and 5-4 in 10 innings at New Richmond Saturday.
In Game 1, the Tigers (8-6) got a strong pitching performance from Evan Sawyer, but could only manage two singles in support of the southpaw.
MHS left the go-ahead run on base in the seventh. Levi Simpson got the victory for New Richmond and led the Lions’ hitting attack with a triple and RBI.
In the nightcap, Marietta plated three runs in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead, but could not hold on in extra innings. Austin Hefter (2-4) and Joe Roberts (1-4) knocked in runs in the fourth and Corey Spanner, Evan Sawyer, and Nathan Bryan each had hits for the Tigers.
Dalton Henderson (2-3, double and 2rbi) laced a two-out single off reliever Nick Lewis to plate the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
Josh Heiden, the fourth Lion pitcher, held the Tigers hitless and scoreless over the last four innings to earn the victory.
“We played two solid games against a strong opponent, which showcased our quality pitching,” said MHS co-skipper Jim Thrash. “The Lions are a top-10 D-II team in the Cincinnati area (according to Cincinnati Enquirer poll).
“Although we are disappointed with the results, we hope this experience will help propel us to victories this week in four ECOL games.”
