Marietta Soccer Classic to kick off this weekend

Most of this weekend’s sports action will be in Devola, the site of the 22nd annual Marietta Soccer Classic.

The tournament, which is hosted by the Marietta Soccer League and sanctioned by USSF affiliate Ohio South Youth Soccer Association, is scheduled to kick off Saturday and conclude Sunday at the Marietta Soccer Complex, where all the matches will be played (or other pitches as needed).

Friday is check-in day at the Comfort Inn in Marietta.

According to tourney director Eric Keffer, there could be over 2,000 people in town this weekend, depending on the number of teams participating.

The Marietta Soccer Complex itself is located in Devola, which is approximately five miles north of Marietta, off State Rte. 60.

The competition will be held in boys U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14 and Girls U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15 age divisions.

Each team will play a minimum of three preliminary matches, and the championship games are slated for Sunday afternoon.

Winning teams in the gold divisions will be awarded Columbus Crew tickets for each player/coach on the roster. The winning teams will be recognized at the Crew Night of Champions in Crew Stadium later in the MLS (Major League Soccer) season.

This will be the second straight year that the Marietta Soccer Classic has been partners with The Columbus Crew.
