All-District baseball honorees announced

Danny Pannell put together an outstanding season on the mound this spring for the Warren High baseball team, and was rewarded by being named Ohio Division II first team All-Southeast District.

Pannell, who will play collegiately at Muskingum next year, was 8-3 on the mound in 2013 for Mark Farr-coached Warriors.

Pannell helped lead the royal blue and white to sectional and district championships, as well as a regional appearance.

Marietta left-handed hurler Evan Sawyer joined Pannell on the D2 first team.

Sawyer posted a 1.70 earned run average and struck out 43 batters in 49.1 innings pitched this spring for the Tigers. He was also the team’s top hitter.

Sawyer teamed up with All-East Central Ohio League pick Ben Barnas to form one of the top pitching duos in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

In the Division II East district, Morgan’s Austin Campbell and Dustin Duffy were each named first team all-district.

Campbell, a shortstop, and Duffy, a pitcher/first baseman, were each instrumental in helping the Raiders finish with a winning record for the first time since 2002.

In Division III, five area players were first team all-district. In the East district, Monroe Central’s Kordell Antill and Tanner Burkhart and Fort Frye’s Caden Brooker and Spencer Lang all made the first team.

Antill was one of the more dominating pitchers in the area and also handled the bat well.

From the leadoff spot in the batting order, Lang was a force all season long for the sectional champion Fort Frye Cadets.

Lang batted a whopping .451 and stole 39 bases without being caught. He hit a team-leading two home runs, drove in 19 runs and scored 36 more.

Lang was also 5-3 on the mound this spring with a 3.52 ERA.

Brooker was 5-1 on the hill for Fort Frye with a 3.41 ERA.

In the Southeast District, Belpre’s Mike Simmoniette was the lone Golden Eagles on the first all-district squad.

In Division IV, Waterford’s Devon Patterson, Frontier’s Mitch Minder, Shenandoah’s James Luyster and Caldwell’s Tyler Willey were first team all-district selections in their respective districts.
