MHS girls’ tennis team returns top 6
The Marietta High girls’ tennis team got off to a good start Monday, defeating visiting Cambridge High, 4-1, in a season and East Central Ohio League opener at the Glendale Courts.
“We return our top six players from last season as well as having two freshmen who will compete for varsity positions,” said Marietta head coach Chris Mayer.
Last fall, the Lady Tigers finished 5-9 overall, and were third in the ECOL with a 5-5 mark.
MHS freshman Katie Kitchen made her varsity debut at No. 1 singles, and dominated the Lady Bobcats’ Emile Anderson, 6-1 and 6-0.
Christy Heisler, the Lady Tigers’ lone, returning All-ECOL honoree and a two-year letterwinner, played at No. 2 singles, and swept Cambridge’s Lexy Baker 6-2 and 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Marietta suffered its only setback in the match when sophomore and letterwinner Calya Rake dropped a pair, 6-0 and 6-4, to the Lady Bobcats’ Meggie Eyen.
In No. 1 doubles, Marietta seniors’ Amanda Ferguson and Madison Miller teamed up to beat Cambridge’s Samie Brown and Bre Tetirick, 6-0 and 6-1.
Ferguson and Miller each own three letters.
Caitlin Harrison, the Lady Tigers’ other senior on the roster and also a three-year letterwinner, did play against CHS.
Marietta junior Emily Ketelsen and freshman Emma Stubbe joined forces in No. 2 doubles, and defeated Cambridge’s Madyson Ancell and Olivia Rhodes, 6-0 and 6-2.
Ketelsen is a two-year letterwinner.
MHS, 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECOL, is scheduled to host Dover in another league match at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
“We should have a strong team this season,” Mayer said.
