Prep football: Jackets defeat Knights
WILLIAMSTOWN – Host Williamstown survived six lost fumbles and had to stave off a late fourth-quarter Tyler Consolidated comeback to post a 27-14 season-opening win Friday night.
The Yellowjackets led comfortably27-0 with five minutes to play before the Silver Knights’ Jordan Baker, at quarterback, run it in from eight yards out, then added a two-point conversion dash at the 4:21 mark, narrowing the gap to 27-8.
Then Tyler recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Williamstown 38.
Jacob Highley, who rushed for 154 yards on 29 carries on the night, proceded to bang away on successive runs of 11, 20 and finally seven yards for a touchdown at 2:42.
But freshman Darren Hastings recovered Tyler’s onside kick.
Still though the Silver Knights got the ball back anyway with 1:10 left, but at their own 17.
Tyler got runs of 11 and 12 yards and a last-ditch 32-yard pass from Baker to Chase Cooper to the Williamstown 28 as time ran out on the Silver Knights’ chances.
The Yellowjackets at the onset Friday looked strong, as Cody Smith blocked a Tyler punt and Hunter Neely recovered at the Tyler 36. Williamstown went on to score on the possession as QB Jake Tracewell tossed a 10-yard TD strike to Neely at 4:41 of the first quarter.
Tracewell added a 46-yard six-point aerial for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead to David Hastings, who darted down the sideline to paydirt at 8:04 of the second period.
Then after Neeley intercepted at the 50 and returned it to the Tyler 22, Tracewell picked his way 12 yards into the end zone 4:42 before halftime for a 21-0 lead at intermission.
The ‘Jackets’ final TD, in the third quarter, was set up by Tracewell’s 35-yard pass to Brandon Root to the Tyler 25.
Two plays later from the 23, Dakota Watson scampered 23 yards through the Tyler defense and into the end zone at 11:05 for a 27-0 bulge.
