Tiger aces: MHS tennis team beats Claymont, stays undefeated

Marietta High continued its sparkling play on the tennis courts with a 4-1 triumph over visiting Claymont in East Central Ohio League action Tuesday.

Katie Kitchen, Christy Heisler, and Amanda Ferguson each won in singles, while the No. 2 doubles team of Caitlin Harrison and Calaya Rake posted a doubles victory.

MHS improved its overall and ECOL record to 4-0.

“The girls have been playing well all season long,” said Marietta head tennis coach Chris Mayer. “They’ve been in a groove, and I hope they can maintain the momentum throughout the season.”

Kitchen, a freshman, played at No. 1 singles, and won 6-1 and 6-0.

“I played pretty well today,” she said. “I had a couple of aces, and I was pretty happy with my service game. My opponent played pretty well, too, but I came out on top.”

At No. 2 singles was junior Christy Heisler, who won 6-0, 6-0.

“We both ran each other around the court,” said Heisler of her opponent. “The match was pretty quick, but we had close games.”

Ferguson, one of three Tiger seniors on the team, also blanked her Mustang opponent, 6-0, 6-0. This was her first match as a singles player this season.

“I had to cover more of the court than I’m used to,” said Ferguson, who normally plays first doubles. “But I’m glad it went well.”

Claymont averted a shutout when its No. 1 doubles team swept Marietta’s Emily Ketelsen and Emma Stubbe, 6-3, 6-3.

But Marietta’s No. 2 doubles team of Harrison and Rake capped all the competition at the Glendale Courts with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph.

Marietta’s undefeated team is scheduled to host Tri-Valley Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

“That’s awesome,” said Heisler of the Tiger netters’ undefeated start. “I’m really proud of us.”

Added Ferguson, “Last year, we went undefeated for awhile, too. But then we lost one or two. Hopefully, this year we can go undefeated the whole season.”
