Marietta clinches ECOL tennis crown

DOVER – Marietta High put an exclamation mark on East Central Ohio League tennis play with a 3-2 triumph over Dover High at Dover City Park Wednesday.

“It’s never an easy task playing Dover,” said fourth-year MHS coach Chris Mayer. “Most of the matches were close, and it wasn’t a sure thing.

“The girls played well and pulled it out.”

With the victory, the Tigers clinched the league championship outright and remained undefeated at 14-0 overall and 10-0 ECOL. Going into the match against the runner-up Tornadoes (15-2, 8-2), the orange and black netters were assured of at least a share of the tennis title, which is both Mayer’s and Marietta’s first in the ECOL. The Tigers for many years competed in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League (SEOAL). MHS has one more regular-season, non-conference match on its schedule at Logan High at 4:30 p.m. today.

Earlier this season, Marietta defeated Dover 3-2 on the Glendale Courts.

On Wednesday, Katie Kitchen won at No. 1 singles, defeating Dover’s Sierra Sandy, 6-2, 6-2. The freshman standout improved her overall record to 13-2.

At No. 2 singles, Christy Heisler beat Jessica Gao 6-4, 6-2. An all-league honoree last season, the Tiger junior is now 15-1 overall.

In No. 3 singles, Marietta senior Caitlin Harrison fell to Erica Roth, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Marietta’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors’ Madison Miller and Amanda Ferguson clinched the league crown with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Dover’s Selena Peterson and Cassie Cochran.

In No. 2 doubles, the Tiger duo of Emily Ketelsen and Emma Stubbe dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) decision to the Tornadoes’ Brenna Deneher and Hanna VanSile.

Also on the 2013 ECOL champion Marietta roster was sophomore Calaya Rake and assistant coach Mike Miller.
