Prep golf: MHS golfers defeat Logan
BEVERLY – The Marietta High golf team is clicking on all cylinders.
The Tiger golfers triumphed over Logan High in a dual match Monday at Lakeside Golf Course in Beverly.
MHS shot 147 as a team while Chieftains were 12 strokes behind at 159.
“I’m really happy with the way the kids shot tonight,” said Marietta golf coach John Doughty.
The duo of Jeffrey Hensler and Nathan Matheny led the way for the orange and black. The sophomore Hensler and the senior Matheny each shot a 35 on the front 9 to claim co-medalist honors.
“Nathan and Jeffrey put up very good scores,” Doughty said of his No. 1 and No. 2 golfers.
Nick Thieman also broke 40 for the Tigers, carding a 37. Thieman had success at Lakeside earlier this season, shooting a 73 at the Waterford Invitational Aug. 14 to earn co-medalist honors.
“I knew Nick was gonna put up a good score,” Doughty said. “He really likes this course.”
Max and Matt Fitzgerald each contributed a score of 40 to round out the Tiger scores.
“The Fitzy’s played very well tonight,” Doughty said. “Shooting a 40 on the front 9 is pretty good.”
Garrett Bertram also played for Marietta, but did not finish the round due to an illness.
Logan was led by Jake Barstow and Hunter Fizer, who each shot a 38. Logan Holbrook shot a 41, Jared Walker and Paul each shot a 42 and Kevin Broles chipped in with a 49 for the Chieftains.
For Marietta, the match was an important tune-up for next Tuesday’s sectional tournament, which will also be played at Lakeside.
“We treated this as more of a practice round to get ready for the sectional next week,” Doughty said. “The kids got to see a lot of the course.”
Doughty hopes to get the team out for another practice round on the back 9 sometime this week. The second-year head coach is hoping his team will be well-prepared for the sectional match.
“I think they’re ready,” he said.
