Prep golf: Tiger golfers win ECOL championship

WEST LAFAYETTE – Marietta High has captured four East Central Ohio League Scarlet Division golf crowns in as many years.

Led by first-team all-league honorees’ Nick Thieman, Nathan Matheny, and Jeffery Hensler, the Tigers golfers defeated Dover 324-326 in the second round of play at River Greens Golf Course Wednesday.

MHS also topped the Tornadoes, 323-330, in the opening round at Zanesville Country Club Aug. 19. The orange and black’s two-day total was 647, while Dover’s was 656.

Rounding out the rest of the ECOL field, Cambridge had a 668; New Philadelphia, 686; and Zanesville, 776.

“I’m very happy with the way the kids played today,” said second-year MHS golf coach John Doughty, who was named the ECOL Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. “This was our fourth time, and everybody was gunning for us. We had the bull’s-eye on and continued to play well.”

Playing off the blue tees on the par 72 course, Thieman led the way for Marietta, carding a 76 (38-38). Matheny followed with a 79 (39-40); and Hensler shot an 82 (42-40).

Rounding out the rest of the Tigers’ squad, Garrett Bertram carded an 87 (44-43); Max Fitzgerald shot an 89 (45-44); and Matt Fitzgerald had a 94 (44-50).

Hensler’s total score for the two-days was 156; Matheny, 158; Thieman, 158; Bertram, 175; Max Fitzgerald, 180; and Matt Fitzgerald, 185.

Trevor Wilkinson of Cambridge, with a two-day total of 154, was named the ECOL Player of the Year.

MHS is scheduled to golf against Logan at Lakeside Golf Course in Beverly Monday at 4 p.m.

The Tigers will be opening up sectional tournament play at Lakeside on Oct. 1, at 10 a.m.

Note: In the ECOL Gray Division, Claymont was first; Meadowbrook, second; Coshocton, third; River View, fourth; and Rosecrans, fifth.
