MHS wins sectional golf championship
BEVERLY – Marietta High is headed to district after winning the sectional golf title at Lakeside Tuesday.
“I’m very excited,” said MHS golf coach John Doughty.
“I’m happy with 304.”
Dover was runner-up in the 12-school field. Last year, Marietta was second.
As they have all year, the Tigers got big performances from junior Nick Thieman and sophomore Jeffrey Hensler, who were co-medalists in the event.
Hensler and Thieman both shot 72s to lead the way for Marietta. For Thieman, the score continued a streak of good performances at Lakeside, after earning medalist honors with a 73 at the Waterford Invitational and later shooting a 37 in a 9-hole dual match against Logan.
“This is his third match here and he’s scored well all three times,” Doughty said. “He’s very comfortable here, and Jeffrey was too.”
Senior Nathan Matheny carded a 78.
Marietta’s No. 4 golfer Garrett Bertram had trouble on the front-9 Tuesday, shooting 8-over, but kept his composure and put together a solid round on the back-9 to salvage an 82.
“Garrett struggled a little bit on the front-9,” Doughty said. “He was 8-over after 9, but he played the back a lot better. His course management was much better on the back-9. The results came in and he had scored a lot better on the back-9 than the front.
“He could have very easily went the other way, and we could have been looking at a 90 or something like that for him.”
Max Fitzgerald rounded out the scoring for the Tigers with a 97.
The district match will take place at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Apple Valley Golf Course in Howard.
