Prep boys soccer: Warren, MHS to meet in district final Saturday
LUCASVILLE – Warren avoided an overtime when it scored in the last second of regulation time.
Aaron Mazurkiewicz’s goal with 1.6 seconds remaining lifted the Warriors to a 1-0 triumph over Chillicothe Unioto (10-5-4) in a Lucasville District II boys’ soccer semifinal game at Valley High Wednesday.
Freshman Carter Magers got the assist, and keeper Tyler Schwendeman was credited with a clean sheet.
Two-time defending district champion Warren (15-2-2) is now scheduled to play Marietta in a championship tilt at Valley Saturday at 4 p.m. The Tigers defeated Lancaster Fairfield Union 1-0 in a Wednesday nightcap semi.
Jacob Holdren had the goal for the orange and black booters.
Todd Morris-coached MHS improved its record to 14-2-3. The Falcons exit with a 12-6-1 mark.
At stake in the district tilt will be a berth in the regional tournament at Logan next week.
While the Warren-Unioto game was even-steven on the scoreboard for the vast majority of the match, the Andrew Johnson-coached Warriors were more offensive-minded and had the Shermans in a defensive posture.
The royal blue and white booters had a number of scoring opportunites but were unable to finish the deal.
Unioto had to sub goalies when starter Tanner Cremeans was injured after a collision with Warren’s leading scorer Alex Miller.
Sherman reserve Nick Overly, however, did a nice job between the pipes, and he and his defensive unit were able to make several saves on Warrior shots.
In the Marietta-Fairfield Union game, the Tigers staked themselves to a 1-0 advantage on Holdren’s goal in the opening half.
During regular-season action, Warren edged Marietta 2-1 at the Devola Soccer Complex, and tied the Tigers 1-1 in Vincent.
Last year, the Warriors eliminated the Tigers 2-1 in overtime in a sectional championship game in Vincent.
