Prep volleyball: Waterford wins district VB title

JACKSON – Waterford continued its dominating run in volleyball postseason play with a sweep of Portsmouth Notre Dame in Ohio Division IV Southeast District Championship action at Jackson High Saturday.

Sparked by Alyssa Miller, Laura Hill, Taylor Hilverding, Dani Drayer, Haley McCutcheon, and Maddy Sury, the Jandy Drayer-coached and No. 2-seeded Wildcats (23-2) defeated the Sarah Castle-led and top-seeded Titans 25-13, 25-12 and 25-16.

After a hard-fought first set went to the TVC Hocking Division champion Wildcats, the Titans trailed 21-3 in the second set but rallied with nine of the set’s final 13 points before going down.

In what turned out to be the finale, Notre Dame raced out to its biggest lead at 9-7, forcing Waterford to burn a timeout.

However, the momentum for the Titans was short-lived as the Wildcats went on a 12-1 run and never looked back.

The district final appearance was the first in school history for Notre Dame (21-5).

Waterford’s district title was its first since 2010. Since then the Wildcat netters had dropped two straight district finals.

Making its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2010, D4 No. 16-ranked Waterford is scheduled to play No. 13- Newark Catholic in a regional semi at Lancaster High Thursday at 6 p.m.
