Five Marietta High golfers have earned Division I Southeast District honors.

Leading the way for the Tigers was sophomore Jeffrey Hensler. Hensler was named co-District Player of the Year, along with Logan High’s Logan Holbrook, in addition to earning first team All-District and All-East Central Ohio League honors.

Hensler posted a team-best 75.25 round average this season.

He was a co-medalist, along with teammate Nick Thieman, at the sectional tournament at Lakeside Golf Course in Beverly and shot 75 at the district tournament at Apple Valley Golf Course, one stroke away from advancing to state.

Thieman, a junior, and senior Nathan Matheny were also named first team All-District, along with Logan’s Jacob Barstow and Jackson’s Evan Massey.

Matheny, who was also named first team All-ECOL for the second year in a row, led Marietta in greens in regulation and averaged a 77.3 per round score.

Thieman, who in addition to the district honors was named first All-ECOL for the first time, was third on the team with a 79.37 average.

Junior Garrett Bertram received second team All-District recognition along with Logan’s Paul Duffy and Jared Walker and Jackson’s Cole Massey.

Bertram led the orange and black in fairways hit at 49 percent.

On the honorable mention All-District list was Marietta’s Max Fitzgerald, Logan’s Hunter Fizer and Jackson’s Jared LeMaster.

Fitzgerald averaged a score of 86 per round.

As a team Marietta shot a 304 at Lakeside to claim a sectional championship. The Tigers also won the Waterford Invitational at Lakeside this season by shooting a 299.

The team posted an overall record of 104-48 in 2013, and everyone returns for next season with the exception of Matheny for head coach John Doughty’s squad.

Said Doughty, “I’m very pleased. The kids worked really hard this year. It wasn’t an easy schedule. We played some very tough schools. It means a lot to have these kids honored. I’m very proud of them.”
