Prep girls basketball: Belpre girls roll

BELPRE – Jumping out to a 22-2 lead after just the first quarter, host Belpre never looked back in cruising to a 52-25 girls basketball victory over Wood County Christian Tuesday night as the Golden Eagles improved to 4-0 on the season.

A week and a day previous on Nov. 26, the Wildcats fell to Belpre 71-63 on their homecourt. But Tuesday was a different story in Belpre’s home opener.

The Golden Eagles started with a trey from the corner by Jackie Cunningham, and they got their fast break rolling in the last three minutes of the first period to forge a 20-0 lead before Adria Herridge finally broke the ice for WCC at the one-minute mark with a basket.

With Belpre substituting freely in the first half, the second stanza saw WCCS actually outscored the Golden Eagles 10-9, but still trailed 31-12 at the half.

However, Belpre dominated the third quarter 13-3 to pull ahead by a 44-15 margin going to the last period, which the Eagles took 10-9 for the final 27-point margin.

Belpre’s Katelyn Hughes led all scorers in the game with 14 points, followed by teammates Sierra Barker with 11 and Lexus Cunningham with 10, while Hannah Lawrentz added eight.

For WCCS, now 0-2 with both losses to Belpre, Hannah Lord led with nine points and Heather Lord netted eight.

The game, after Belpre had it well in hand, “was a chance for us to see some different types of personnel combinations on our end,” said Golden Eagle head coach Scott Miller.

Although Miler did note that “we needed to work on playing against a zone (defense), but did that in our (first-quarter) run.

“And from that point on, we stressed on working on defense mostly.”

Miller thought too that his team had an advantage by playing two other games between the two versus WCC.

“They had a game cancelled, so while we played, they didn’t for the last eight days,” said Miller.

Belpre is home for two more games now, first against Miller Monday night and then Federal Hocking next Thursday, Dec. 12.
