Prep basketball: Marietta girls win

BYESVILLE – Marietta High had only five girls score, but it was enough offense to defeat host Meadowbrook 53-40 in an East Central Ohio League basketball game Wednesday night.

Lain Weppler paced the Mark Hannuksela-coached Lady Tigers with 14 points. Brittany Deskins added 13, Starr Johnson had 10, and Taylor Smith netted nine.

Marisa Goodnight led the Lady Colts with 13 markers.

Marietta improved its record to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the ECOL, while Meadowbrook dropped to 3-11.

Last Saturday night, the MHS girls topped Chesapeake, 54-34.

Johnson tallied 15 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Alle Moore and Callee Dowler added nine apiece.

Monroe Central 60, Barnesville 44.

WOODSFIELD – A 60-44 victory over Barnesville Wednesday put the Monroe Central Lady Seminoles over .500 on the year at 6-5.

The Lady ‘Noles shot just 31 percent (19-for-61) from the floor but forced Barnesville into 29 turnovers and limited the Lady Shamrocks to just 35 shot attempts in the game.

Barnesville trailed by just seven points going into the final quarter, but Monroe Central outscored the Shamrocks 18-9 in the fourth period to pull away.

Allison Kuhn sank four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points, while teammate Annie Digity added three triples and 11 markers.
