Prep boys basketball: Cougars defeat Toronto
NEW PHILADELPHIA – Frontier High torched the nets like there was no tomorrow.
The Roger Kirkpatrick-coached Cougars shot 58 percent from the floor en route to a 77-48 triumph over Toronto in an Ohio Division IV sectional boys basketball opener at New Philadelphia High Friday night.
“We played well, and it was a good effort,” said Kirkpatrick, whose Cougars are scheduled to play Berlin-Hiland in another tournament and elimination game at New Philadelphia at 6 p.m. next Friday.
Berlin Hiland advanced with an 82-23 win against Bellaire St. John.
Nick Camino led the scoring parade with a game-high 29 points, including 19 in the opening half. Rodney Barnes added 17 points, and Drew Schneider netted 16, including four treys. The Cougar trio combined to drain eight three-pointers.
Toronto was paced by Blaze Glenn, who tallied a team-high 21 points.
Frontier is slated to play a makeup game against Mark Duckworth-coached Marietta High at Sutton Gym at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
