Spencer Motor Sports getting ready to compete

BELPRE – Dana Spencer and Chris Forshey have the auto racing bug and are looking forward to competing on the track.

Recently, the twosome made the decision to transition over to the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) “Spec (Mazda) Miata” racing.

Previously, Spencer and Forshey had helped provide guidance to the former’s grandson Tyce Church in a # 21 “Buckeye Bandit” Bandolero.

Earlier this year, Spencer purchased a 1994 Spec Miata from a race team in Bellingham, Mass. In early February, he and Forshey drove to New England and transported the race car back to Belpre. Since that time, they have been preparing the car for the upcoming race season, including new graphics and sponsorship decals.

Forshey will be driving the Spencer Motor Sports (SMS) # 99 racing Miata, and racing on road courses at tracks like Mid-Ohio (Lexington), Summit Point Raceway (Summit Point, W.Va.), and Virginia International Raceway (Danville, Va.).

Later this month, Forshey will be attending a three-day school at Summit Point to obtain his SCCA completion license. The first race of the season is scheduled at Summit Point on April 12-13.

Spencer plans to obtain his SCCA competition license either this summer or next spring, so he and Forshey can drive the 6 and or 12 hour endurance races.

Spencer said he’s been fortunate to maintain most of the sponsors who supported the Bandolero efforts, in the new Mazda Miata racing operations. Those local companies are Advance Auto Parts (1301 Murdock Ave., Parkersburg W.Va.), Auto Teck and Tire Center(18581 SR 7, Marietta), Straightline Collision (1269 SR 618, Belpre), Franklin Sign Machine (158 Warner St. Marietta) and Forshey Marine Service (201 1/2 Colegate Dr., Marietta).

The SMS # 99 racing Mazda Miata will be displayed and featured at local car shows, businesses, and events as well as racing, in an effort to return support to the sponsors.
