League action: Marietta’s Crum, Elliott claim ECOL track titles

A rain-soaked Don Drumm Stadium played host to the 2014 East Central Ohio League Championship track meet Friday.

Marietta, competing on its home track, struggled to compete with some of the bigger, more experienced schools. The B.J. Mayer-coached boys team placed sixth out of 10 teams while Mollie Schramm’s girls were eighth.

Both teams did, however, have one athlete win an ECOL championship. Freshman Aaron Elliot took home the high jump title (six feet, one inch) while senior Lizzy Crum hit the 10-foot mark to win the pole vault crown.

Elliot had an all-around productive meet. He placed third in the long jump (20-5) and was a part of Marietta’s 4 by 100 and 4 by 200 relay teams that finished third. Elliot teamed up with Quinton Coffield, Austin Jones and Bernard Johnson in the 4 by 1 (45.04) and joined Jones, Coffield and Garrett Davis in the 4 by 2 (1:34.23).

“He finished the high jump, he went over to the long jump and it’s raining sideways and he still goes 20 feet,” Mayer said. “Aaron’s really come a long way mentally.”

For Crum, it is her second league championship in a row. She was fortunate enough to have first place in the vault wrapped up before a big storm crept over Don Drumm and hung around for nearly two hours.

“She was lucky,” Schramm said.

“It was a colder day. We just came off a week of 85 to 90 degree weather.”

Kayla Schradel finished close behind Crum in the vault, hitting the 8-6 mark to take third.

The Lady Tigers had four girls notch fourth place finishes at the league meet.

Anna-Claire Myers ran the 200 meter dash in 28.81 seconds to finish fourth.

Embrey Roberts was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.49.

Madison Miller hit the 4-foot, six inch mark in the high jump and Jasmine Tabler jumped 14 feet, .75 inches in the long jump, both good for a fourth place finish.

Kelsey Hall placed sixth in both the 1600 and 3200 while setting personal records in both events.

“They just have to keep remembering that they’re young and they’ll get better,” Schramm said of her squad.

On the boys side, Coffield and Jones gave Marietta a pair of scorers in the 200 meter dash. Coffield placed third (23.39) while Jones was sixth (23.84).

The Tigers, who have predominantly relied on their sprinters and jumpers this season, got pleasant surprises in distance and throwing events.

Jacob Haught posted a time of 4:51.13 in the 1600 meter run to place third, while Tyler Haught also placed third in the discus throw (124-2).

Caleb Hall went 12-6 in the pole vault for a third place finish and was also fifth in the 110 hurdles (19.71). Jack Farrar also scored in the pole vault, finishing sixth (11-6).

“It’s a tough league,” Mayer said. “We’ll be alright.”

The Tigers will be back at Don Drumm Thursday when they host the district meet.

NOTES: Six meet records were broken Friday and another was matched.

Zanesville’s Leo Crosby threw 54-2 in the shot put to best Rosecrans’ David Cline’s mark of 52-3.25 last year.

Cambridge’s Eric Fox, Dover’s Katherine Lehman and Zanesville’s James Clark broke their own records from last season. Fox hit 15 feet in the pole vault to top last year’s mark by six inches.

Clark ran the 400 meter dash four-tenths of a second fast this year (50.05) than he did last year (50.45). Lehman shattered her time of 11:32.86 in the 3200 last year, running it in 10:57.89 Friday.

Zanesville’s boys 4 by 100 relay team set the new mark at 43.91 while Rosecrans’ girls 4 by 800 team broke the record with a time of 10:00.95.
